Funding Secured for Lincolnshire Leadership and Management Centre
The University of Lincoln have kindly let us know that the interim report we prepared just before Christmas summarising our research to date for development of the Lincolnshire Leadership and Management Centre has helped the Centre secure a £900,000 grant award.   Our scheduled Stage 1 draft report was presented to the client at the end of January and we are now underway with Stage 2 of the project which is directly seek the views of SMEs

Globe's latest client - Lincoln University Business School

Lincoln University Business School have appointed Globe to undertake a market research and development consultancy to inform the provision for Small & Medium sized Enterprises (SME’s) through the Lincoln Leadership & Management Development Centre.

The study, part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, aims to provide an evidence base to demonstrate business needs, preferences and investment criteria and highlight competitive factors.  The Lincoln Leadership & Management Development Centre is planned for the ground floor frontage of the ‘Lincolnshire Echo’ building on the Brayford Waterfront in Lincoln. The building has been acquired by the University to create a new home for the Faculty of Business & Law in September 2010.  The Leadership & Management Development Centre is expected to be in place in late 2011.

Globe to review the effectiveness of regional trade and export activity in the East Midlands

Globe have been appointed by East Midlands Regional Assembly to undertake a scrutiny review into the effectiveness of regional trade support by edma and UKTI. Renewing a successful previous collaboration they will do this in partnership with Professor Andrew Atherton and the Business School at the University of Lincoln. MD Ivan Annibal said - "There is much to celebrate in winning this work. It will be the 4th review we have supported since 2006 and I am delighted to continue our successful association with EMRA."

Cathedral Visitor Review

Globe and Professor John Shepherd have just completed a refresh of the visitor patterns and spend linked to Lincoln Cathedral. The formal results of the study will be revealed at a meeting of the Deans of the East of England at the Cathedral on 7th October. Professor John Shepherd said - the similarity in the number and distribution of visitors between this year and last year is astounding. Working positively with Rural Estates Report Launched

Globe's joint report with Smiths Gore was launched by our client emda at the Belvoir Game Fair last week - we have a few copies on CD which you can request and we have loaded a copy of it on our publications part of the site.

Lincoln Cathedral Visitor Survey Refresh

Following on last year’s groundbreaking evaluation of the Economic and Social Impact of Lincoln Cathedral, Globe is volunteering its resources to undertake a refresh of the visitor data survey on behalf of the Cathedral. Conducted over three days, the data collected will allow us to build upon the aforementioned evaluation and identify any longitudinal trends and key markets for the Cathedral. Globe is pleased at the opportunity to offer our expertise for the benefit of Lincoln Cathedral and the wider community.

Public Service Delivery in Rural England

Globe Regeneration Limited and Birkbeck College (University of London) are delighted to announce details of our new training course in rural service delivery. This one-day bespoke course is intended for personnel involved in any aspect of service delivery. The course will examine in an interactive and practical way what “rural” means, investigate ways it can be measured and look at the challenges and opportunities of working in a rural environment.

Key components of the course include:

  • Defining rural England
  • Rural governance, structures and organisational dynamics
  • Rural-proofing – challenges and practical application
  • Practitioners’ views on rural service delivery
  • Delivering well-being in rural areas

The course will be held on Tuesday 20 October from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm at Birkbeck College (University of London). 

The course costs just £375 + VAT for RSN members and £425 + VAT for other participants. 

As an introductory offer, three places have been reserved on the first course on a “buy one – get one free” basis for community and parish organisations.

At the end of the course participants will receive an attendance certificate.

Evaluation of ONS Regional Presence for RDAs

 Yorkshire Forward, on behalf of all Regional Development Agencies, has commissioned Rocket Science and Globe to undertake the Year 2 evaluation of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Regional Presence Function.  Through consultation and evaluation, the team is providing the RDAs with information and analysis to help inform their decisions on future funding for the service; and equally important, understand the issues within regions in light of longer-term requirements such as the Integrated Regional Strategy (IRS) and local Economic Assessments (EA) as well as current issues around the economic climate.

West Devon 'The Village Hub' Project

Globe has been commissioned by West Devon Borough Council to quantify the costs and benefits of introducing electronic outreach facilities in small villages, particularly with poor broadband accessibility, across West Devon, Torridge and South Hams District Council areas. The project, ‘the village hub – community access and information points’, is funded by SW Councils RIEP. The outcome of this work will be a strategy for mainstreaming community access to Council services through the provision of ICT mediated services.

Working Positively With Rural Landowners Project Completed

In collaboration with Smiths Gore, Globe has supported the recent completion of the Working Positively with Rural Landowners Project. The project, commissioned by emda, comprises an in-depth analysis of the number, scale and nature of estates in the East Midlands as well as their economic, social and environmental contribution to the regional economy.”

Look out for the announcement of the new academic partnership arrangement between the Rural Services Network and Birkbeck College at the University of London, brokered by Globe www.rsnonline.co.uk - through this arrangement you can access the first bespoke training course in Rural Service Delivery and access the full range of rural resources of Birkbeck's Rural Evidence Research Centre along with subsidised economic development consultancy.

Well-being Case Studies – Progress Update

Further to Globe’s commission in January 2009 to deliver the CRC’s ‘Sustainable Economic Well-being: Spreading Best Practice’ project, 13 case studies were identified and investigated to provide a series of insights for rural communities in terms of economic well-being.  Look out for the publication of the CRC guidance in July 2009 which will showcase initiatives as diverse as the Penwith Healthy Boxes initiative, the Torr Mills Hydro, ‘Out of the Rut’ and the Museum of East Anglian Life.

Economic Assessment

We have now begun the process of writing up the outcomes of the Action Learning Set of 10 local authorities on how to undertake an economic assessment. Depending on the progress of the SNR legislation our guidance, which will run hand in hand with the statutory process, will be published in July or December 2009. Economic Development Training

Globe successfully completed delivery of a programme of economic development training to key staff at Government Office North East and Government Office West Midlands. In total 40 participants received training and negotiations are subsequently underway to roll the programme out to other Government Offices and Local Authorities. Discussions are also underway with the Institute of Economic Development to give professional recognition to participants on this programme. If you would like to know more about participating in this programme, which is normally delivered on a group basis at the location of the organisation receiving the training thereby providing lower costs around travel and subsistence and excellent value for money, please contact Ivan Annibal.

Economic Development Training for Government Office

Globe in partnership with Rocket Science have been commissioned by Government Office North East to deliver a programme of underpinning knowledge and training in economic development. The course which has been developed on a bespoke basis, bringing together practitioner insights and theoretical and conceptual elements will be delivered in March 2009.

Best Practice in Economic Well-being for CRC

Globe has been commissioned by the Commission for Rural Communities to deliver their Sustainable Economic Well-being: Spreading Best Practice project. Globe, which tendered for this project in partnership with Rural Innovation, is very pleased to be undertaking a second significant piece of work for CRC and are looking forward to working with their team again. The project is due to start in the second half of January.

Learning and Skills Council Monitoring Services Extended

The Learning and Skills Council have announced their intention to extend one of the contracts that Globe has with them by a further 12 months, to March 2010. We provide the LSC with a bespoke monthly monitoring service using a methodology and survey structure that was developed by Globe in response to LSC’s specific contract management requirements for the National Learning Directory. We are very pleased to be able to continue our contribution to the LSC’s quality management process and look forward to working with the Client team over the next 14 months. (Globe is also responsible for the accuracy monitoring of UK wide learning opportunities records on the National Learning Directory).

Economic Assessment Duty Action Learning Set

Globe, in partnership with Rocket Science, were awarded the contract by IDeA and Planning Advisory Service to develop an Action Learning Set of local authorities to pilot the development of techniques in relation to the proposed new duty to undertake an Economic Assessment as part of the Sub National Review. This will involve supporting up to 10 local authorities and developing a series of tools and guidance papers.

Planning News
Lynette Kaye, Principal Consultant was recently successful in winning a planning appeal against the decision of the London Borough of Islington to refuse planning consent for a proposal in Finsbury Park. In a separate commission, Globe were also successful in achieving planning consent for two linked applications within the London Borough of Camden on behalf of London & District Housing.

Promotions at Globe

Elizabeth Spurr has been promoted to Globe Consultant. She has been with the company for three years and was previously employed as a Researcher. Elizabeth’s new role will include work on the Learning and Skills Council Careers Advice Service Accuracy Monitoring Project and the Commission for Rural Communities, Rural Development Programme for England network project.
